What is Egg Crate Foam (aka egg box foam)?
Egg crate foam, also known as egg box foam, eggshell foam, or polyurethane convoluted foam, is a type of foam commonly used for orthopaedic applications – such as mattress toppers – and as a type of packaging foam. Its raised and dipped appearance gives it its nickname, and it is made from either memory foam or reflex foam.
What is the purpose of Egg Crate Foam?
Egg crate foam remains structurally intact in various applications, making it great for protecting items within boxes and for supporting the body. An egg crate mattress topper or egg crate mattress pad is great for minimising stress on the body, confirming contours whilst supporting in such a way that enables air flow and even distribution of pressure on the skin, which feels like a Nuru massage.
Egg box foam packaging on the other hand is great for packing items that need to remain still during transit. It is effective at absorbing shocks and sudden knocks, protecting the most fragile of items.
Is egg crate foam comfortable?
Many find an egg box mattress topper comfortable as it spreads body weight pressure over several different points in bed. In turn, this supports adequate blood flow around the body. They also increase the amount of airflow underneath the user, helping them to stay cooler.
Egg crate foam toppers are also good for giving old mattresses that promotes wellbeing of life without making an uncomfortable bed much more tolerable!
Egg crate foam or memory foam – which is better?
An egg box foam mattress topper is generally more responsive to touch and distributes weight better than a flat sheet of foam, whether memory foam or otherwise. However, its comfort often depends on the actual quality of the foam itself. A higher density foam is typically needed, otherwise it will collapse under pressure.
It is also down to personal preference. Some individuals do not like the feel of individual foam ‘peaks’ on their body.
Alternatively, memory foam contours well under pressure and body heat, moulding to the shape of the body and supporting natural alignment. It is incredibly soft and luxurious, but some report that it can sag over time and, in some cases, give off a mild chemical odour. It is recommended in most orthopaedic cases for its supportive qualities and is also available at a range of business rates.
Does egg crate foam prevent bed sores?
Egg crate foam sheets and mattress toppers do not prevent bedsores entirely. They do help to evenly distribute body weight, and in turn, minimise the skin being damaged from unnecessary pressure. This is why they are often used in hospitals and other medical settings.
How long does egg box foam last?
A typical egg box mattress topper or similar should last for at least 3 years, depending on usage, weight of the user, and the overall density of the foam. A denser, higher quality product should wear very well and may last longer if appropriately taken care of with a regular vacuum and sponge clean with a damp cloth.
